比起剪碎，根據台灣衛生署疾病管制局，若是配戴口罩到有感染性的環境，請將可能被污染的一面往內摺，丟到夾鏈袋內封好丟棄，或是丟在醫院裡處理感染性廢棄物的垃圾桶，並立即洗手或消毒。
如果沒有感染性的疑慮，而口罩內側已潮濕造成不適感，將用過的口罩丟到垃圾袋封好丟棄即可，無論如何最重要的是，使用完口罩要記得洗手或消毒。
