輝瑞公司 CEO Albert Bourla 的確表示他們正在研發一種用於治療COVID-19症狀的口服藥物，「有可能會在」今年(2021)年底之前向公眾提供。該公司在新聞稿中表示，口服藥物可通過阻斷蛋白酶來起作用，蛋白酶是病毒能在體內複製的關鍵要素，該抑制劑藉由抑制蛋白酶，來阻撓病毒增生、防止病情惡化，HIV、C型肝炎藥物也都是使用蛋白酶抑制劑。

同時，CEO Albert Bourla 說該藥「可能」對新興的變種有效。

但該藥還在臨床實驗階段，還沒有任何相關實驗成果釋出。
