根據黎國官員說法，爆炸原因主要是焊接作業引爆堆放在港口倉庫的2750噸硝酸銨。《路透》引述黎巴嫩安全部門說法，港邊倉庫因為牆壁出現破損，管理人員為了補洞，在大約設施攝氏40度的高溫下進行焊接作業，不料卻引發另一間倉庫裡的硝酸銨發生爆炸。《俄羅斯衛星網》指出，黎巴嫩當局6年前經查緝沒收一批重達2750噸的硝酸銨，儲放在貝魯特港的一間倉庫中，卻從未進行任何額外的安全防護。
