NTM是絕對嗜氧的耐酸菌(acid-fast bacilli, AFB)，廣泛存在於自然界，如土壤、水和食物中。
非結核分枝桿菌(NTM)不會有人傳人的問題，且不易致病，一般相信其傳染的途徑是由口腔黏膜進入
並不是所有的NTM都具致病力，在正常情況下，NTM並不會在人體造成疾病，但當宿主的免疫力或皮膚、黏膜的保護屏障受損，
