氰基丙烯酸酯是屬於丙烯醛基的樹脂，當把瞬間膠塗在物件表面時，溶劑會蒸發，而物件表面或來自空氣中的水份（更準確是水份所形成之氫氧離子）會使單體會迅速地進行陰離子聚合反應（anionic polymerization）形成長而強的鏈子，把兩塊表面黏在一起。由於其聚合過程是放熱反應，所以可以發現其溫度會輕微上升。由於溶劑（丙酮）在其間蒸發，所以使用瞬間膠會嗅到一些難耐的異味。
