肯德基日本發言人表示，此事起源於日本首間肯德基的店經理大河原毅（Takeshi Okawara），因為他在店裡聽到幾個外國人在聊天時講到，他們非常懷念聖誕節的火雞大餐。大河原毅則希望，炸雞餐可以成為替代品，也開始以慶祝聖誕節來行銷派對桶。1974年，肯德基將此行銷計畫推往全國，獲得極大成功。
