恙蟲病並不會直接由人傳染給人，是經由感染立克次體的恙蟎叮咬人類時，立克次體透過叮咬部位的傷口進入人體而感染。恙蟲病的潛伏期約為6至21天，通常為9至12天。發病症狀：猝發且持續性高燒、頭痛、背痛、惡寒、盜汗、淋巴結腫大、恙蟎叮咬處出現無痛性的焦痂（eschar）、一週後皮膚出現紅色斑狀丘疹，有時會併發肺炎或肝功能異常。在沒有經過適當治療的病患中，死亡率可高達60%。
