食道癌早期無症狀難診斷，臨床發現即約有8~9成的患者都已經為中晚期，由於發現時腫瘤多已順著淋巴血管擴散，出現遠端轉移，因此，往往5年存活率不到20%。甚至如果屬於第三、四期，經過放療、化療先將腫瘤縮小，再予以開刀切除，以及進行胃部重建，3年存活率也不到一半。
