標題聳動吸引讀者點閱，人類經由鼻子吸入含有福氏內格里阿米巴原蟲的水而受到感染。將鼻子或頭部浸入受污染的水中（如潛水、跳水等與水有關的活動），可能造成感染，男孩風險可能增加(與喜好玩水活動或許有關，但真正原因不明)。但喝到含有福氏內格里阿米巴原蟲的水不會被感染。福氏內格里阿米巴腦膜腦炎不會人傳人。
