Symbiosis Alternative Portfolio
Background Information: Relationships aren't always love-love in biology, nor are they always
love-hate. Relationships among organisms can take on many different meanings. Coevolution is
the result of symbiosis between two species where they evolve together and develop such a
close relationship that one needs the other for survival.
If both organisms benefit from the relationship, it's called mutualism.
If one benefits, and the other gets nothing, it's called commensalism.
If one organism benefits while the other is harmed, it's called parasitism.
Directions: Create a classified advertisement/wanted ad for a job opening in which an organism
in a symbiotic relationship is looking for the other organism. The ad should be based on
mutualism, parasitism, or commensalism. Your creation should be from the point of view of the
organism that benefits from the relationship. For example, if the relationship is parasitism, the
organism getting harmed wouldn't be seeking out the organism that would harm it.
Here's what you'll need to do to get the maximum score on this assignment:
Write a catchy headline to grab attention (2 points)
Then write supporting information for each of the following. Each bullet is worth 2 points.
Describe the relationship you are seeking (mutualistic, parasitic, commensalistic)
Describe who you are and the qualities you possess
Describe the type of organism you need for the job and why you need this
service
Describe what you will give the organism in return for his or her services
Add some pictures!
For your ad, include the following pictures (if you can't find them online, draw them). Each
picture is worth 2 points.
A picture of you, the organism in search of the relationship
A picture of the organism for which you are searching
A picture of you together in your symbiotic relationship
Pictures must be neat and colorful (can be hand-drawn)
Your ad can be constructed using PowerPoint, as a brochure, newspaper ad, magazine ad,
poster, prezi, video, etc. Be creative! Please ask if you need help deciding how to present your
work.
