坊間所教的香蕉皮殺蟑法是仰賴清潔劑，而非香蕉皮本身。
包括蟑螂在內的昆蟲，多數都是透過體節上的氣門呼吸，因體表有蠟、油質保護，若用水噴蟑螂，還是會被隔絕，但用肥皂水或清潔劑噴就不同了，只要量足夠，便可去掉蠟質、油質，堵住蟑螂的氣門，讓牠無法呼吸，窒息而死。
