警方查訪發現，這名婦人是64歲的戴姓女子，住大里區新生路，因為有高度近視，當天未戴眼鏡，要到學校帶姊姊女兒的兒子到醫院探望住院的姊姊，當時看見劉姓男學生的背影誤以為是姊姊的外孫，才會從後面輕拍他說：「你媽媽住院，我帶你去醫院看他」，劉姓學生轉身後，戴女發現認錯人，未多做解釋，就自行離去，並沒意圖帶走他的意思，完全是一場誤會。
