美國有線電視新聞網（CNN）報導，佛羅里達州研究人員認為，他們的實驗證明了，武漢肺炎病毒已產生基因突變，使人體細胞更容易受到感染。

世界衛生組織（WHO）指出，新型冠狀病毒至今發現的突變，不會影響目前研發中各種疫苗的效力。突變並未使病毒更容易傳播，也不至於引發更嚴重的疾病。而美國科學家海瑟廷（William Haseltine）表示：「病毒在一月中旬的某個時候出現了突變，使得病毒更具傳染力。這並不表示病毒更具致命性，但傳染力提高了約10倍。」
