相信死刑具嚇阻效用的那些人不瞭解人性。罪惡的激情不會比高尚的激情更受阻於對於死亡的恐懼。假如對死亡的恐懼擋得了人，世上既不會有偉大的士兵，也不會有偉大的運動家。我們欽佩這些人，他們在面對死亡時毫不遲疑。其他那些被別種激情所驅使的人也毫不遲疑。所謂處於極度激情中的人會因怕死而被約束，這種想法只是為了死刑而被創造出來的。
