人參除了根部會持續生長，地面上的莖稈是一歲一枯榮的（重新長出的葉子每年都不一樣），此外人參還有休眠的自我保護行為，也就是它們發芽時如果受到蟲害、野獸侵害等，芽便會停止生長，會在土壤中休養生息一年或幾年而不出土。因此很多放山人，今年在這個地方發現人參覺得太小，來年再來找就找不到了，才會產生人參會跑的錯覺。
