在感染區工作的醫療人員，用畢的口罩，都會丟棄在加蓋的「感染性廢棄物」垃圾桶。在脫下的時候，儘量不要接觸到口罩的表面，拿著口罩的耳掛(或橡皮筋)去丟，丟完就要「馬上洗手」。如果是健康的人，只是外出在戴口罩，沒去醫院，那就看接觸到感染性飛沫風險的可能性高或低，若高，可以將口罩反摺，放進夾鏈袋內封好，再丟棄到有蓋的垃圾桶。
