植物學上，果樹的花分成雌蕊與雄蕊，雌蕊與雄蕊雜交之後，產生果實膨大，也就是民眾常吃的水果。因此，並不會把水果分成公母，僅有把花分成雄花、雌花。坊間流傳的水果分為公母，應該只是農民或是經銷商依據水果的品種與外觀差異，所流傳的說法。在植物生物學上，只有雄蕊與雌蕊之分，其結出的果實並無公母之分。
