內文的症狀並不是全都會發生，猴痘屬於「人畜共通傳染疾病」，透過接觸染疫動物體液或食用染疫動物；接觸染疫者體液、分泌物或長時間飛沫傳播。潛伏期約5至21天，通常6至13天，主要症狀為發燒1至3天後，全身長水泡和皮疹，皮膚病灶如皮疹、斑疹、水泡等，會出現發燒、畏寒、肌肉痛、淋巴腺腫大等，部分出現生殖器感染，兒童或免疫低下族群恐導致重症。
