血型和相當多的疾病有關係，最廣為人知的乃是Duffy 血型和瘧疾的關係，最近研究顯示Lewis血型和幽門桿菌感染有密切的關係。因為幽門桿菌的感染可引起十二指腸潰瘍，而幽門桿菌可和胃黏膜細胞上的Leb結合而不和A-Leb結合。故O型的人易得十二指腸潰瘍。但是1996年有幾篇報告(發表於美國胃腸雜誌)並不能證實其相關性。
